A year after Ash was appointed gym leader, nobody could find him. So clearly their decision was to find Gary and give him the same position of Viridian gym leader. Honestly Gary didn't want it much, but he eventually just got forced into it.
He figured Ash would eventually come back so Gary ended up buying a pokegear for his old rival and forcing it on him. His words were along the lines of "What's the point of being a leader if nobody knows where you run off to, dweeb?"
So now both Ash and Gary share the post of Viridian gym leader. They switch off gym leader duties yearly. When Ash is off he goes and challenges other leagues. When Gary's off he goes forth and does research.
Unlike Ash Gary's actually around Kanto/Johto the entirety of the year he's there instead of bailing to go explore new regions. Though Gary is also very rarely at the gym. He's there every weekend, but every weekday his schedule fluctuates.
PERSONALITY | FUN FACTS
-He can be very polite.
-He's generally friendly to people he doesn't know.
-The closer you are with him, the more likely you are to be insulted or teased.
-Will help you out if your a close friend
-The pokemon under his protection come first. Especially when he's acting as a researcher.
-Threatening wild pokemon is the best way to get on his bad side.
-He can usually be found around Pewter City's museum when he's on gym duty.
-Fascinated by fossil pokemon.
-May make a little poem if asked to, depends on the person who asks.
-Would like to make a name for himself other than "the Professor's grandson".
-Despite that, he's still very close with his Gramps.
-Ash is his idiotic best friend. He's fairly protective of him, though Gary's sure Ash can take care of himself. Most of the time. Ash is an idiot after all.
-He still carries around his half of the broken pokeball.
-Loves attention, though it's toned down quite a bit from his beginning year as a trainer.
-Is good at his chosen profession (researcher).
-Isn't quite as good of a trainer as Ash, but he's close- came with quitting the league challenges.
-Will actually give advice instead of completely tearing down people who lose to him.
-Is the only person who always knows where Ash is at any point in time.
-Knows Ash runs into legendaries, but has no idea how often. (Knows about half of the stories related to Ash running into a legendary of some sort.)
-Knows his limits and will ask for help accordingly.
-6' exactly.
-20 years old.
-Green eyes, brown hair.
-Can generally be found in a labcoat, even acting as gym leader.
-Clothes tend to purples and blacks, everything he owns is comfortable to move around in.
